Common Mormon

A huge butterfly spanning around 90 - 100 mm from tip to tip. This butterfly is a type of its kind and shows sexual demorphism and mimicracy.

The male can be easily identified due to the white spots on the margins of its wings.
The females perfectly mimic the common rose but can be distinguished. And the male is much smaller than the females.

The pictures show both male and female of the same species mating.

Common Sailer

This is a magnificent black and white butterfly having three white lines which are almost parallel on its black background. These bands are comprised of various spots on the hind and fore wings. They appear to be unbroken in the middle. This butterfly may be easily mistakable for the Common Sergeant. But Sailors can be marked for their big size i.e. from around 50 -60mm from tip to tip.

You can differentiate this speiceis of Sailors by looking at the topmost band which has a triangular diagnostic. It is a widely distributed butterfly and is found throughout the year.

This butterfly gets its name from the way it flies. It has a very slow sailing flight, but it can easily turn into a dodgy and jumpy one in a blink of an eye.

Common Mime

The Common Mime an amazing creature right from the egg to the adult butterfly..

The COMMON MIME - It is a large butterfly having 2 forms. The form 'clytia' mimics the Common India Crow, while 'dissimilis' mimic the Blue Tiger. Yellow spots on its hindwings distiguishes it from its original models. The best place to sight this butterfly is while it is mud-puddling along riparian patches, its much preferred habitat. The flight of The Common Mime is lazy with continues fluttering of wings.

This butterfly at its pupa stage is utterly amazing. It simply looks like a twig on a branch. Its truly a marvel of camouflage.

Photography Of Butterflies.....

Photography of butterflies is a very un-usaual and rare hobby. Many people mostly look for birds all over the place but neglect the lesser known fauna - BUTTERFLIES.

Any normal camera with suitable macro attachments is good enough for getting pictures.
A normal 18-50mm lens is more than enough to get amazing pictures.

The best time to capture pictures of butterflies is at dawn. WHY?? Butterflies are cold blooded and need to attain a certain temperature( around 30C) to do what they do best - FLY. During the morning butterflies bask in the sun and are easily approachable.

Many a time people use unethical and orthadox methods for getting good pictures. People might pinch the anthrax(middle portion) of the butterfly.. Therefore stunning but not killing it. They might even bait the butterfly. The real pleasure and fun is the long hours of patience and the back breaking postures to get the perfect picture.

Common Pierrot

A small white butterfly usually having black spots on its underside as well its upperside. Mostly it is seen with its wings closed, the pied colouration is an instant revealer.. The central portion of the wings lack the black markings, which distiguishes it from other Pierrots. As in "Blues", the hind wing has metallic green spots and a short thread like tail. It is a common butterfly seen in Goa and is seen flying very close to the ground in open areas..
